Problems with Laboratory Tests for Virus Infections
|Chairmen's Introductory Remarks
Hiroshi YOSHIDA, MD*1 and Yoshinori IWATANI, MD*2
The accuracy of laboratory tests for virus antigens and antibodies is critical.
Recently, studies have shown that the clinical sensitivities and specificities
of the tests for HBs antigens and HCV antibodies are very different among
the commercial kits. Re-evaluation of these kits has started, but similar
problems are also observed in tests for other viruses. This year, we focused
on rubella, since the number of women negative for serum antibodies against
rubella virus may increase in pregnant women in the future, and so the
incidence of congenital rubella syndrome may increase. Furthermore, we
examined the influenza virus, since new rapid diagnostic kits and specific
drugs have been developed.
